ZPPSU in Pink: Advocating for Breast Cancer Awareness

ZAMBOANGA PENINSULA POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSITY (PIO) — This Pink October, Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University (ZPPSU) strengthens its advocacy for women’s health and community empowerment through a Breast Cancer Awareness Orientation and Free Breast Screening and Consultation in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025, held at the university gymnasium and medical building yesterday, October 24.

The activity aimed to raise awareness of the importance of prevention and regular screening as vital measures for the early detection and treatment of breast cancer, and to encourage more women to take proactive steps in protecting their health and well-being.

Head of the Breast Wellness Center Dr. Filipinas Rojo emphasized that “Breast cancer is a curable disease when detected, treated, and managed early.”

The healthcare providers, including the City Health Office, Ciudad Medical Zamboanga, West Metro Zamboanga, Zamboanga City Medical Center, and the PhilHealth Regional Office IX, presented their respective programs and services to promote awareness and support for the participants.

Further, breast cancer survivors, including Ms. Luz Mary Vic Garcia and Ms. Jocelyn Enriquez, shared their inspiring testimony, empowering not only women but everyone to prioritize their health, engage in healthy physical activities, spend quality time with family and friends, and strengthen their faith throughout their journey toward healing and recovery.

ZPPSU Vice President for Administration and Finance Ms. Josephine L. Sulasula has also asserted that healthcare awareness is a shared responsibility that begins from within.

“Each of us — not only those battling breast cancer — should transform fear into fortitude, silence into support, and awareness into action,” VP Sulasula added.

Meanwhile, Zamboanga City District 2 Councilor Hon. Kimberly Anne D. Villaflores, reminded everyone to continue supporting the campaign not only every month of October but throughout the entire year, to sustain education and compassion in the fight against the disease.

Anchored on #FAITH — Fortitude, Acceptance, Inspiration, Trust, and Hope — ZPPSU stands in unity with the community and the world, believing that together, we can continue to fight, heal, and grow stronger.

The activity was successfully hosted by the university’s Gender and Development Office and Medical-Dental Health Services Unit, in coordination with the City Government of Zamboanga and other partner institutions. (Written By: Ms. Rio L. Landingin/JRA/Photos By: Oscar Jr. Rojas/Public Information)
