Patent examiners support univ. inventors, stress patent protection

ZAMBOANGA PENINSULA POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSITY (PIO) — Identified innovators of the university were convened for a three-day seminar-workshop, aimed at strengthening the intellectual property culture of the ZPPSU, held in a hotel from July 16 to 18, this year.

The event provided valuable information and training on protecting the intellectual property rights of the inventors, giving them exclusive control over their inventions with the collaboration of the university.

To note, patent protection plays a crucial role in safeguarding the intellectual property of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the Philippines, particularly for their research and development outputs.

Bureau of Patents – Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) Chemistry Examining Division Chief Ms. Rosa M. Fernandez and ICT Examining Division Chief Engr. Rico E. Collado, as the esteemed trainer, expressed their affirmation and support to the innovators and the university.

“You have the financial and technical support, and now with the creation of a technical working group. You have all these things. Saan pa kayo? Kundi sa ZPPSU na!,” Ms. Fernandez said.

Further, the ZPPSU community is encouraged to undertake research projects that result in products with practical applications that respond to current needs and problems.

The ZPPSU Intellectual Property Office headed by Engr. Edgar Coronel, as also stated in the IP handbook, will give a safe atmosphere to creative people, as this will fairly benefit from their intellectual pursuits and the university’s research agenda, while, at the same time, fulfilling their social responsibility in the community.

The BOP-IPOPHL is hopeful for more community-benefited inventions from the ZPPSU, and proper compliance with the patent application process.

The event is dubbed “Application for Patent, Utility Model, Industrial Design, Copyright, and Trademark Seminar-Workshop.” (JRA/ABC/Public Information Office)
